Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorder is a cluster of neuro-developmental conditions that were traditionally called Autsim, Asperger’s syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder and childhood disintegrative disorder. Recently this cluster of conditions has been re-categorized by the Diagnostic and Statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM) as Autism Spectrum Disorders. The new categorization has focused on the fact that these disorders are unique and vary but share common symptoms. Individuals with ASD present with neurological, behavioral, and learning difficulties which cause them to be unable to process and respond to sensory information accurately. Based on the concept of neuroplasticity and the brains ability to create new connections, these individuals respond well to sensory integration training and can improve in their neurological, behavioral and learning difficulties. At HDPT, we combine our MARS protocol with sensory integration-based treatment approaches to improve the daily functioning of individuals with ASD.
